  8. Zlatan Ibrahimovic £155million ($190million)
  9. Ronaldo £130million ($160million)
  10. Alexandre Pato £118million ($145million)

Just to clear up a few names on those lists you might be unfamiliar with:

Dave Whelan

Dave Whelan played football in the 1950s and 1960s for Blackburn Rovers and Crewe Alexandra.

In 1960, at the age of 23, Whelan broke his leg in the 1960 FA Cup Final for Blackburn against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Whelan was never the same player and his next game after the 1960 Cup Final (in May 1960), wasn’t until February 1963, by which time he had been transferred to Crewe Alexandra.

He went on to rack up 115 games for them before retiring in 1966 at the age of 29.

However, Whelan made his money in retail. He started out on a market store in Wigan market and progressed to open a chain of supermarkets in Lancashire.

In 1978 he sold these to supermarket giant Morrisons for £1.5million.

He then acquitted a fishing and sports store that would go on to become JJB Sports and in 1995 bought Wigan Athletic. At the time they were in the bottom tier of English football.

Mathieu Flamini

You should recognize the name of Mathieu Flamini, but you might be surprised at his vast wealth!

He was a good player, playing for Marseille, Arsenal, AC Milan and France amongst many others.

That undoubtedly made him a multi-millionaire but it was his business ventures off the football pitch that propelled him to the top of one of these lists.

In 2008 he co-founded GF Biochemicals, which became the first company in the world to mass-produce levulinic acid.

I have no idea what this really means, but it sounds impressive and it obviously is judging by his estimated net worth!

Faiq Bolkiah

Now this player I had never heard of.

Considering he plays his football for Chonburi, a team in the top division of Thai football, you can be sure he didn’t make his money from football either!

Faiq’s extreme wealth is due to the fact that he is a member of the Brunei Royal Family. His father is the Prince of Brunei and his uncle is the Sultan of Brunei.

His footballing career saw him play at a youth-level for Southampton, Chelsea and Leicester. He then played in Portugal for Maritimo, before joining Chonburi in Thailand.

He is also a Brunei international.

Final Thoughts

Lionel Messi makes a lot of money!

So do Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a lot of other footballers!

In reality, some of the figures above are mindblowing, when I was breaking down salaries into per minute, hour, day, etc, I had to keep double checking I hadn’t missed a decimal point somewhere…

Neymar makes £156,923 ($192,574.68) a day!! A DAY!

Crazy money, but then people are willing to pay them it.
